It is likely fitting that my inaugural post is on Friday the 13th and features the otherworldly splatterfolk of Thinguma@jigSaw.  Please enjoy their tenebrous ode, “Camp Blood, Then and Now.”  Expect things to continue in this vein.

Ghoul’s Out!  No really, it is.  This is a choice bit of ghoulish gristle from Thinguma*jigSaw’s sophomore album Ghoul’s Out, which was just released over the weekend in Norway.  I will listen to this over and over while I wait (im)patiently for the album’s international release.  I hope it whets your appetite for fine splatterfolk as well!

I received a copy of Thinguma*jigSaw’s Ghoul’s Out yesterday in the post and, as expected, it is a masterpiece!  It is fantastic to have recorded versions of some of my favorite songs from their live set, such as “We’re All Doomed” and “The Perfidious Sarcophagus,” and also brilliant to have some new-to-me songs to sort through.

I have a death-wish
I wish to die
To return in the morning and
Eat you alive
No grave can hold me down now
I’ll rise from the dirt
When there’s no more room in Hades
I shall walk the earth

TOP FIVE ALBUMS OF 2010

Thinguma*jigSaw - Ghoul’s Out

Sample track: “Ghoul’s Out”

Ghoul’s Out was easily the album I was looking forward to most in 2010.  I had heard a handful of the songs on Ghoul’s Out when Thinguma*jigSaw played in Syracuse; hearing them played live really only served to whet my appetite.  The wait for it may have felt like an eternity, but it certainly didn’t disappoint.  Thinguma*jigSaw call their music “splatter folk,” an unholy melding of traditional folk instrumentation and horror movie aesthetics, but Ghoul’s Out occupies an odd corner of musical expression.  While some of the band’s other material is downright sinister, the songs collected on this album have a strangely uplifting undercurrent that balances perfectly against the morbid metaphorics and living death lyricism.
