It is likely fitting that my inaugural post is on Friday the 13th and features the otherworldly splatterfolk of Thinguma@jigSaw. Please enjoy their tenebrous ode, “Camp Blood, Then and Now.” Expect things to continue in this vein.
I first discovered Edison Woods via Coilhouse and have been in love with their haunting sound ever since. Their music is like the soundtrack to a David Lynch film that doesn’t yet exist.
Caveat emptor: they often seem to be out of stock of their own albums on their website, so check with them first before sending a payment!
Ghoul’s Out! No really, it is. This is a choice bit of ghoulish gristle from Thinguma*jigSaw’s sophomore album Ghoul’s Out, which was just released over the weekend in Norway. I will listen to this over and over while I wait (im)patiently for the album’s international release. I hope it whets your appetite for fine splatterfolk as well!
The unmistakably haunting Sharron Kraus paradoxically performing a dark, morbid lullaby at the feel-good Summer of Love festival. Good on you, Sharron, for bringing a bit of mortal gravity to the folky proceedings.
I received a copy of Thinguma*jigSaw’s Ghoul’s Out yesterday in the post and, as expected, it is a masterpiece! It is fantastic to have recorded versions of some of my favorite songs from their live set, such as “We’re All Doomed” and “The Perfidious Sarcophagus,” and also brilliant to have some new-to-me songs to sort through.

Backworld - “The Devil’s Plaything”
“As in a ruin where violets grow
In moss covered fields
On cold marble stone
Love sometimes steals into a heart…”
Unto Ashes, “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper.”
If you think Saturday Night Live has drained Blue Oyster Cult’s “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” of all its pathos, listen to this version of the song by Unto Ashes and be relieved. It’s all guttering candles, hour of finalities, and memento mori. Lovely.
Continuing the Week of Witchery with Unto Ashes’s “Witches’ Rune.”
